Tungabhadra Souharda Sahakari Ltd., Sindhanur

At the time when the Souharda Act was implemented in Karnataka, cooperatives were few in number. People from economically backward and underprivileged communities faced immense difficulty in securing loans. They were often forced to approach the wealthy or capitalists, explaining their hardships, and borrowing money from them. When they were unable to repay the loan on time or failed to repay it, they were subjected to exploitation and further hardships.

Witnessing this situation, former Member of Parliament Shri K. Virupakshappa, along with his friends, engaged in long discussions and decided to establish a cooperative. Their goal was to uplift these people economically, educationally, and socially. With this noble vision, the cooperative was launched.

In the financial year 2000-2001, under the leadership of Shri K. Virupakshappa, the cooperative was initiated with a capital of just ₹3 lakh and 300 members. On July 15, 2001, the cooperative was formally inaugurated during its first annual general meeting at Sri Kanakadasa Pre-University College, Sukalpet, Sindhanur. This marked the beginning of the Tungabhadra Souharda Sahakari Ltd., Sindhanur.

On July 22, 2001, the first board meeting was held where Shri K. Virupakshappa was elected as the president along with eight board members. On February 15, 2002, at 10:00 AM, the official inauguration of the cooperative took place with the Ganesh, Lakshmi, and Saraswati Pooja, followed by the opening ceremony led by Shri H.G. Ramulu, Member of Parliament from Koppal. With this, the cooperative officially commenced its operations.

Growth

In order to make the cooperative's services more accessible to the public, a vision was set to reach customers at their doorstep. As a part of this vision, the cooperative opened several branches: Gangavathi Road in 2009, Turvihal in 2011, Lingasugur and Gangavathi in 2019, Siruguppa in 2021, Gandhinagar in 2023, and Javalgera in 2024. These eight branches have not only provided employment opportunities for many rural youth but also aided numerous educationally, economically, religiously, and socially backward families.

Recognition and Achievements

In 2012-13, five distinguished members of the cooperative, Dr. N.S. Dani, Shri Parasappa Bingi, Shri T. Rudramuni, Smt. Gangamma (wife of Ramdas), and Shri Amaresh Basavaraj were honored with the Best Customer award for their exemplary business conduct.

During the academic year 2015-16, the cooperative provided computers to several educational institutions such as the Kaviratna Kalidasa Education Trust (R), Channalli, Jnana Jyoti Public Primary/High School, Ariginamar Camp, and Vijaya Education Institution, Hanchinala Camp, helping students develop their computer knowledge.

Recognizing academic excellence, the cooperative has set a benchmark by awarding meritorious students, particularly the children of cooperative members. Prizes worth ₹15,000 for first place and ₹10,000 for second place were awarded to students who excelled in the SSLC and second-year PUC exams.

In 2018-19, the cooperative earned the distinction of being the only one in the Kalyana Karnataka region to have 28 buildings, setting an example for others.

Social Contributions

In the social sector, the cooperative has organized free mega health camps for the public, providing treatment for 15 different types of diseases through specialist doctors. More than 3,000 people benefited from these camps. Additionally, 20 ASHA workers who fought against COVID-19 were honored with ₹3,000 each, amounting to a total of ₹60,000 in recognition of their efforts.

Tungabhadra Souharda Sahakari continues to strive towards excellence, working for the betterment of society while maintaining its core principles of service and cooperation.
